Yesterday, I played on the PTR 3.1 server to take a look at the Flame Leviathan boss encounter and to find out all the fuzz about the siege vehicles event. When you zone-in into Ulduar’s Explorer’s League Formation Grounds you will notice a few known NPCs. You will find High Explorer Dellorah escorted by Kirin Tor Mages and Battle-Mages talking to a Lore Keeper of Norgannon.

This is their conversation intro:

High Explorer Dellorah: I heard a story or two of a Lore Keeper in Uldaman that fit your description.  Do you serve a similar purpose?

Lore Keeper of Norgannon: Compromise of complex detected, security override enabled - query permitted.  Orbital emplacements are powered by four primary generators in the Iron Concourse.  Orbital emplacements will actively inhibit any entity attempting to bypass teh front gate or attempting to engage the guardian therein.

High Explorer Dellorah: Got it.  Destroy the generators before battling the guardian unless you’re asking for trouble.  Rhydian, make sure you let Brann and Archmage Pentarus know about those generators immediately.  And you mentioned an imprisoned entity?  What is the nature of this entity and what is its status?

Lore Keeper of Norgannon: Entity designate: Yogg-Saron.  Security has been compromised.  Prison operational status unknown.  Unable to contact Watchers for notification purposes.

High Explorer Dellorah: Yogg-Saron is here?  It sounds like we really will have our hands full then.

There are a few factions helping you to take Ulduar: The Explorer’s League, the Kirin Tor (Archmage Rhydian and Archmage Pentarus), the Gnome Engineer Weslex Quickwrench who you found in Sholazar Basin alongside Nesingwary, and hired goblins from K3 (Storm Peaks). It seems Archmage Pentarus not only sponsored Nesignwary’s expedition, he couldn’t turn down Brann Bronzebeard’s proposal to sponsor the Ulduar invasion.

You will find three sets of vehicles in the 10-Man Ulduar dungeon. At the time of testing, the 25-Man version was not yet tuned up, thus not available for testing. The siege vehicles available are the Siege Engine, the Demolisher and the Chopper (a Motorcyle). Your vehicle HP scales with your gear quality, not its stats. If you have a Heroic Sartharion 3D gear, you will have more HP than someone who has Naxxramas gear.

From what I experienced, this vehicle boss event requires teamwork and coordination in interesting ways. For example, the chopper has three abilities: Sonic Horn (frontal cone attack), Tar (drops tar on the ground) and Speed Boost. The Chopper can drop this tar all around the Flame Leviathan pathing. However, your teammate on the Demolisher is the one responsible to ignite the tar with the cannon. Once the tar is ignited it causes an AOE damage to the boss. The tar stays on the ground for a long length of time, so it is important to have tar all around the place at all times to add extra damage over time.

Flame Leviathan is similar to Ahn’Qiraj 20’s Buru the Gorger. You will see onscreen a message displaying which player is being chased by Flame Leviathan. This is usually any of the Siege Engines. The Siege Engine driver must immediately cast Steam Rush to move away and kite Flame Leviathan around the field. In the meantime, the other siege engine players need to use Steam Rush to gain speed and chase Flame Leviathan to interrupt his Flame Jets (causes 2000 damage every sec). Flame Jets can be interrupted with the Siege Engine’s ability: Electroshock. Winning or losing the event depends on your Siege Engine drivers’s efficiency using Electroshock. The choppers don’t have as much health as the other vehicles, so it is indispensable to interrupt the Flame Jets.

Flame Leviathan has a special buff that stacks over time and increases his speed by 5%. Be familiar with your speed boost abilities to get away from the boss as best as you can to stay alive.

Other players that can’t drive or control cannons can be lodged into the vehicles as passangers. They can’t cast within the vehicle, but they can be thrown by the driver onto Flame Leviathan’s back where the players need to destroy the turrets ASAP. At least there is some pew-pew element to the event where DPS may be valuable.

There is another element of teamwork and coordination for those within the Demolisher.  The cannon operator needs to shoot at the mechanognomes flying above by throwing the anti-air rockets. Once they die and drop to the ground, they release Pyrite, which is needed to fuel the Demolisher.  Once Pyrite is available, the Demolisher driver can use the ability: Hurl Pyrite Barrel which hurls an orb of blue pyrite into the distance, dealing 27000 to 33000 damage, but consumes ammo.  As you can see the big DPS vehicles here are the Demolishers doing huge damage in comparison to the Siege Engine.

In short, the Demolisher’s cannon passenger needs to be pretty good at shooting down mechanognome flyers and loading their Pyrite liquid as fuel to allow the driver to shoot a continued attack of Pyrite Barrels. The damage caused by these barrels stacks on Flame Leviathan.
